A Forecast from the Traditional Man from the Foundation of the Traditional Council of Chiefs, Peter Deng

There is no peace in South Sudan, and no election will occur. What we shall have in the next few months is a nominated president.

Many years ago, I warned the South Sudanese using the image of a collapsing riverbank. It was up to the individual to comprehend its meaning. Significant signs went unnoticed: the War in Tonj and battles between Twi Mayardit and Ngok de Abyei. I saw the creation of the People’s Coalition for Civil Action (PCCA) as the start of the riverbank cracking and I shared my concerns with an official from foreign affairs. Still, my message could not reach Kiir. I wanted to warn President Kiir about the consequences of mismanagement: the total collapse of regions.

There will be no peace after the visit of Pope Francis, the Head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City, The Most Reverend Dr Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and The Right Reverend Dr Iain Greenfield, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland unless the South Sudanese and their leaders can accept themselves and rise beyond tribal boundaries.
